Dear friends,
We gather here today in fellowship to honor David Wallace and to remember him and his companion, Tyler. David was a good person whose contributions to our park were numerous.
As one of Puptown's original members, David helped foster the sense of community that makes this little piece of earth so special. The kindness and compassion he shared resonates still.
As a lawyer, David freely gave Puptown advice on how to navigate the bureaucracy of not-for-profit organization. We are a stronger committee because of him.
As a neighbor, David helped transform this neighborhood into one of Chicago's finest – Uptown is safer, cleaner and more beautiful.
As a friend, David listened to all of us with compassion and always asked how we were and offered to help anyway he could. We are a friendlier neighborhood because of him.
And as a Wallace, David talked warmly about his family, about their accomplishments and their heartaches. We all knew the Wallaces, at least in a small way.
The Puptown community thanks David for this legacy. We thank his friends and family who donated over $6,000 and made our park more beautiful. We thank David Goyer whose meticulous accounting maximized the value of these contributions. We thank the Chicago Park district’s Janet Taylor and our alderman, Mary Ann Smith for their help in realizing these improvements. We thank Ryan Wallace for his design of the gates. We thank Wes Groot, Puptown’s very own smithy, for fabricating and installing the memorial plaque. We especially thank Sue Foreshaw. Her tenacity and follow-through on every detail ensured that this endeavor was a success.
This morning I re-read the Puptown Website post from the winter of 2009 announcing David’s passing. Our friend Ellen Szalinski left a comment and quoted Milan Kundera. I repeat this quote here to close this dedication:
"Dogs are our link to paradise.
They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent.
To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden,
where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace."
We therefore dedicate these new installations to the love and memory of David Wallace and his little dog, Tyler, too.
